Location
ESAPA is located in Avilés, a town by the Cantabrian sea at the Principality of Asturias, in Northwestern Spain. The history of this town is conditioned by the strategic situation of its harbor, leading the economical and social activity of the city since the Middle Age. Avilés combines a traditional old quarter, featuring well preserved monuments, with an industrial landscape around the harbor, dating from the beginning of the 20th century.
The streets and buildings of the old part of Avilés have been declared Historical and Artistic Monument by the Spanish Government. The city preserves important remains from the past, some of them really magnificient.
The city is now undergoing a process of modernization to become an artistic reference place in the North of Spain for the 21st century. This process orbits around the “Centro Cultural Internacional Oscar Niemeyer”, which is currently under construction in Avilés. The project of this international cultural center was kindly donated to the town by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The center has a strong focus on collaboration with other international cultural centers and aims at becoming a forum of knowledge and creativity. ESAPA is scheduled to move to a new building just besides this cultural center in the next few years, so that the school is completely integrated in this ambitious cultural project.
Avilés is only 30 km apart from the other two main cities at the region: Oviedo (capital of the Principality of Asturias) and Gijón (largest city in this geographical area). These two cities host most of the faculties and schools belonging to the University of Oviedo and features an active student life. All the cities are easily reachable by bus or train in less than half an hour.
The international airport is located just 14 km far away from Avilés. The city is connected with the airport by bus.
